East Brunswick Building Permits: Two Drawing Sets, Two Surveys
Planning an addition or a deck in East Brunswick? The Division of Construction Inspection asks for the same pair every time: two sets of drawings and two copies of your survey with the new work drawn on it. Here is what goes in each, and who is allowed to draw them.

Additions and decks, side by side
| Project | Drawings | Survey | Also on the township list |
|---|---|---|---|
| Addition | Two sets, by the homeowner or an architect | Two copies showing where the addition goes | Construction and subcode applications, zoning sign-off, a contract or written statement of the cost |
| Deck | Two sets with a floor plan and section: footing size and location, framing and girder sizes, railing and stair details, ledger and column connections, height above grade | Two copies showing where the deck goes | Zoning sign-off, an HOA (PURD) letter if your development has one, proof of cost |
For a deck, the township hands out a typical wood deck drawing with joist and railing details you can build your set around. Decks count as part of the house, so they must meet the dwelling setbacks for your zone. The Planning Division can tell you what those are.
Who can draw the plans?
The township’s FAQ recommends a New Jersey licensed architect for major projects, which may need floor plans drawn to scale, sections, elevations and details. Girders and columns have to be drawn by a licensed architect. A homeowner who owns and lives in a single-family house can draw plans for minor work like a deck or a small addition. An in-ground pool or a grading plan needs a New Jersey licensed engineer.
After the permit is issued
The Building Subcode page says the permit has to be displayed on the job site and a copy of the approved plans must be there too. The FAQ adds that you build to match the approved plans, and changes during construction need the Construction Office’s written approval. That on-site copy is one of your two sets, so many owners print a third set to keep clean at home or give to the contractor.
Printing an East Brunswick set
A typical addition is two drawing sets plus two surveys, or three sets if you want a spare. Print the survey at the size it was drawn so it stays to scale. Upload your PDFs and pick 18×24, 24×36, 30×42, 36×46 or 36×48. Black and white is $1.95 a sheet and color is $3.75 a sheet, at every size (pricing). Order by 3 PM ET, ships same day, arrives as soon as the next day.
