How many copies of plans do I need for a building permit?
It depends on your building department. Some ask for several paper sets, some for one, and many now accept a digital upload instead. The only reliable answer is your local department’s own submission checklist.
How to find out
- Check the department’s website for a “permit application checklist” or “submission requirements”. It usually lists copies, sheet size and whether drawings must be sealed.
- Call the permit desk and ask: how many sets, what size, and paper or digital?
- Ask zoning separately. Zoning or planning board reviews can have their own copy counts.
Questions worth asking
| Ask | Why |
|---|---|
| How many paper sets? | Copy counts vary by department and project type |
| Full size or half size? | Determines 24×36 vs 18×24 |
| Signed or sealed sheets? | Some projects need a design professional’s seal |
| Digital upload accepted? | May replace some or all paper sets |
