How permits work in Massachusetts
Massachusetts has one statewide code, the Massachusetts State Building Code (780 CMR), enforced by each city or town’s building department. In Boston, permits come from the Inspectional Services Department (ISD); Cambridge and Somerville have their own inspectional services departments. Zoning relief, historic commissions and conservation commissions can each require their own plan sets, so count copies for every board before you order.
