How permits work in New York
Outside New York City, building work follows the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, enforced by the local city, town or village code office (and in some places by the county or the state where a locality has opted out). New York City has its own construction codes and the NYC Department of Buildings, which handles filings electronically. Planning, zoning and historic boards often want their own sets, so count every copy before you order.
