How to Order Blueprint Prints Online, Step by Step
Printing blueprints online means you upload a PDF of your drawings, pick the sheet size, color option, and number of copies, and the printed set ships to you or straight to the job site. No drive to a plot shop, and no waiting at the counter. It works well for architects, engineers, contractors, and homeowners who need permit sets, bid sets, or field copies, especially when the prints need to go somewhere other than your office.
Order prints — upload your PDF, pick size and color, and check out. Or start from the homepage. Want the full rundown first? See how our blueprint printing online service works.
The file does most of the work. A clean PDF at the right sheet size, with every sheet in order, prints the way you expect. A PDF exported at letter size, or missing a page the building department asked for, means a reprint. This guide covers how to prep the file, choose a size, decide between black-and-white and color, figure out copies, and what “same-day” really means for shipping.
When printing blueprints online makes sense
A local plot shop is handy if you’re nearby and need to hand-check a sheet before it prints. Online printing tends to win when:
- You’re not near a plan printer, or the closest one has limited large-format hours.
- The prints need to go somewhere else: a building department in another town, a client, or a job site.
- You already work in PDF. If your CAD or BIM software exports a sheet set, uploading it is quicker than bringing a USB drive to a counter.
- You want the price up front. Per-sheet pricing lets you know the total before you check out.

Step 1: Prep your PDF
Most problems with online plan printing start in the file, so check it before you upload. At Print My Plans, checkout uploads are PDF only. If you have a different file type (DWG, RVT, images), email it to support@printmyplans.com and ask about it before ordering.
- Set the right page size. The PDF page should match the sheet you’re ordering. A 24×36 set should show 24 × 36 in. in your PDF viewer’s document properties. If it says 8.5 × 11 or 11 × 17, re-export from your layout.
- Export from the sheet layout, not model space. In AutoCAD, plot the layout at 1:1 on the correct paper size. In Revit, export the sheets at actual size.
- Use vector output when you can. Vector PDFs keep lines and text sharp. Scanned or flattened raster PDFs work, but small text and thin lines can soften.
- Embed fonts and flatten markups you want printed, so notes and stamps show up as they do on screen.
- Combine the set into one PDF in sheet order: cover, general notes, site, architectural, structural, MEP.
- Keep every page the same orientation, usually landscape.
- Check the graphic scale bar. A scale bar stays correct at any print size, so field crews and reviewers can verify dimensions. Scale accuracy depends on how the PDF was made, so check it in the file before you order.
Step 2: Pick the sheet size
Common U.S. construction sheet sizes are:
- 18×24 (ARCH C): small residential work, additions, decks, sheds, and site sketches.
- 24×36 (ARCH D): the default for most residential and commercial sets.
- 30×42 (ARCH E1): larger commercial, civil, and site work.
- 36×48 (ARCH E): big site plans, master plans, and civil sheets that need room.
At Print My Plans, all sizes cost the same per sheet:
| Sheet size | Black & white | Color |
|---|---|---|
| 18×24 (ARCH C) | $1.95 | $3.75 |
| 24×36 (ARCH D) | $1.95 | $3.75 |
| 30×42 (ARCH E1) | $1.95 | $3.75 |
| 36×46 (sewing pattern) | $1.95 | $3.75 |
| 36×48 (ARCH E) | $1.95 | $3.75 |
There’s no minimum order, so one revised sheet costs the same per sheet as a full set.
Order the size your drawings were set up for. If your title block is 24×36, order 24×36. Printing a 24×36 drawing on a different size changes the scale. Keep the whole set on one size unless the reviewer asks for something else.
More on the most common size: 24×36 blueprint printing (ARCH D) (guide: the ARCH D sheet explained).
Step 3: Black-and-white vs color
Most working drawings (floor plans, sections, details, schedules) read fine in black-and-white, and B&W costs less per sheet ($1.95 vs $3.75). Color is worth it for:
- Renderings and presentation sheets for clients or HOA review
- Color-coded site, utility, or demolition plans
- Marked-up revision sheets where the color carries meaning
A common approach is to print the set in B&W and order only the sheets that need color in color. At Print My Plans you can do that in one order by adding them as separate line items: one item for the B&W sheets (with its own PDF) and one for the color sheets (with its own PDF). Before you order B&W, preview the PDF in grayscale. Very light gray hatching or screened backgrounds can wash out.
Step 4: Decide how many copies
Copy counts depend on what the set is for:
- Permit sets: building departments set their own rules on the number of copies, signed or sealed sheets, and paper vs digital submission. Check your local building department’s submission checklist before you order.
- Bid sets: plan on enough copies for each trade or bidder you’re sending to, plus one for the office. Include any addenda. More detail: bid set printing: how many copies.
- Job-site sets: one for the super or foreman, plus copies for key subs. Field sets wear out, so many teams order a spare. More detail: construction drawing printing for job-site sets.
- House plans you bought online: check the plan license for how many copies you’re allowed to print. See how to print house plans bought online.
When a set is going to more than one place, ordering all the copies together keeps every set on the same revision.
Step 5: Turnaround and shipping
Online printers usually have a daily cutoff for same-day production. Before you order, check two things:
- The cutoff time. At Print My Plans the rule is simple. Order by 3 PM ET, ships same day, arrives as soon as the next day.
- What “same day” covers. It means the order is printed and shipped that day, not delivered that day. Delivery time depends on the shipping option you choose at checkout and how far the package is going.
If you’re working against a permit appointment or a bid date, order early in the week and leave room for transit. Double-check the ship-to address, and add a suite number or job-site contact name if the driver will need one.
Paper: what to expect
Print My Plans prints on bond paper, the standard stock for permit, bid, and field sets. Vellum and Mylar are not offered. If a reviewer or spec calls for those media, ask a specialty reprographics shop.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Exporting at letter or tabloid size. The PDF prints at the size it was saved, so a 24×36 drawing saved on an 8.5×11 page comes out scaled.
- “Fit to page” or “shrink oversized pages.” These settings change the scale. Turn them off when you export.
- Missing or out-of-order sheets. Compare the PDF page count to the sheet index on the cover before you upload.
- Mixed sheet sizes in one file. Split them into separate PDFs and order each size as its own item, or email support@printmyplans.com first if you’re not sure.
- Putting B&W and color pages in one upload. Split the color sheets into their own PDF and add them as a separate color item.
- Light grays in a B&W set. Preview in grayscale first.
- Old revisions. Make sure the PDF has the latest revision clouds and dates, especially on permit resubmittals.
What it costs (examples)
Print cost only, before shipping (shipping is chosen at checkout). Sheet size doesn’t change the price. WELCOME20 = 20% off your first order.
