Half-Size vs Full-Size Plan Sets: When to Print Each
A “half-size” plan set is usually the same drawings printed at 50% linear scale — for example, a 24×36 sheet reduced toward 12×18, or an 18×24 reduced toward 9×12. Full-size means the sheet matches the CAD/PDF page size so a scale bar still reads correctly with an architect’s scale. Both have a place on a job. Mixing them up is what causes bid mistakes and rejected permit packages.
This guide covers what “half-size” actually means, when full-size is required, when a reduced reference set is enough, how to stamp and export safely, and what Print My Plans can print today on the website.
Print My Plans prints on bond paper only (we do not offer vellum or Mylar). Upload PDF only — other file types: email support@printmyplans.com. For checkout walkthrough, see how to print blueprints online. Most full-size sets land on 24×36 — see our 24×36 ARCH D guide. Pricing deep-dive: how much it costs to print blueprints.
Order prints — upload your PDF, pick size and color, and check out. Or start from the homepage. Want the full rundown first? See how our blueprint printing service works, including full-size 24×36 prints.
What “half-size” actually means
- Linear half, not “half the paper cost only.” Cutting each dimension in half cuts area to about one-quarter, so ink and paper costs drop — but every dimension on the sheet is also half as large.
- A dimension that measures 40’–0" on a full-size 1/4"=1′-0" sheet will not measure correctly on a half-size print unless you switch scales (for example to 1/8"=1′-0") and everyone on the team knows that.
- Stamp or title-block note: write HALF SIZE — VERIFY SCALE (or “NOT FOR CONSTRUCTION MEASUREMENTS”) so nobody scales off a reduced set by accident.
- Prefer a graphic scale bar on every sheet; it stays honest even when the sheet is reduced. A numeric scale note alone is easy to misread after a resize.
If you ever get prints that look wrong because of a printing mistake on our side, email support@printmyplans.com — we reprint and ship free. For anything else (wrong file uploaded, wrong size ordered, revision mix-ups), email support@ and we’ll help sort it out.
Checkout sizes (full-size, same flat price)
These are the sizes on the website. Same price on every size — no upcharge for larger sheets.
| Common name | Sheet (inches) | Typical use | B&W | Color |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ARCH C | 18×24 | Smaller details / compact sets | $1.95 | $3.75 |
| ARCH D | 24×36 | Most US construction sets | $1.95 | $3.75 |
| ARCH E1 | 30×42 | Larger civil / site | $1.95 | $3.75 |

| ARCH E | 36×48 | Full-size civil / presentation | $1.95 | $3.75 |
No minimum — even one sheet. Other sizes (including true half-size like 12×18 or 11×17): email support@printmyplans.com rather than assuming the order form lists them.
When full-size is the right call
Use full-size (most often 24×36 / ARCH D, sometimes 18×24, 30×42, or 36×48) when:
- Building department / permit — most U.S. plan reviewers expect full-size sheets matching the submitted PDF.
- Bid sets for subcontractors who will take off quantities from the drawings — see bid set printing.
- Job-site working sets where framers, electricians, or inspectors measure from the print — see construction drawing printing.
- Owner/architect reviews where redlines need room and clarity.
- Any set where someone will put an architect’s scale on the paper and trust the written scale note.
Never treat half-size as a substitute when the contract, AHJ, or sub says “full-size plans.”
When half-size is useful
Half-size shines as a reference set:
- Estimators who already have a PDF on screen and want a cheap paper flip-through.
- Project managers who carry a set in a backpack or truck cab.
- Markups and meeting notes when the full set stays in the trailer.
- Homeowners reviewing layout, not measuring walls for construction — see how to print house plans bought online.
About true half-size (12×18, 9×12, 11×17): those are not standard checkout sizes at Print My Plans. Email support@printmyplans.com with the PDF and page count. For many teams, the simpler path is a full-size 24×36 working set plus the PDF on a tablet for reference.
Clean half vs messy half: an exact half of 22×34 is often 11×17 (linear scale becomes half). Cutting 24×36 toward 11×17 is not a clean half — stamp NOT TO SCALE or rely on a graphic scale bar only.
How to export a half-size PDF (if your CAD allows it)
- Keep a full-size PDF as the source of truth for permits and construction.
- If you need half-size paper, either (a) plot a second PDF at 50% from CAD, or (b) ask the printer whether they can scale at plot time for a custom size.
- Update the title block or add a plot stamp: sheet size, scale note, date, and HALF SIZE — VERIFY SCALE.
- Never rely on “Fit to page” on a letter or tabloid printer for construction takeoffs.
- Upload PDF only at checkout. DWG, RVT, or other formats: email support@printmyplans.com.

FAQ
Are half-size plans to scale?
Not at the scale printed on the sheet. A 50% reduction halves every dimension, so 1/4"=1′-0" reads as 1/8"=1′-0". Mark the set “HALF SIZE — VERIFY SCALE” and measure from full-size prints or the PDF.
Will a building department accept half-size plans?
Usually not for the official submission. Most U.S. plan reviewers expect full-size sheets that match the submitted PDF. Check your local building department’s submittal checklist before printing.
What’s the most common full-size sheet for construction drawings?
24×36 (ARCH D) is the everyday size for residential and light commercial sets. 18×24 is common for small projects, and 30×42 or 36×48 for larger commercial work. All sizes cost the same per sheet at Print My Plans — see the 24×36 ARCH D guide.
Do you print 11×17 / 12×18 half-size sets on the website?

No. Print one sheet or several full sets. Same flat price on all checkout sizes — $1.95 B&W / $3.75 color.
