Washington, DC (all eight wards), Arlington County, the City of Alexandria, Fairfax County (Tysons, Reston, Herndon, McLean, Springfield, and the City of Fairfax), Loudoun County (Leesburg, Ashburn, Sterling), and Prince William County (Manassas, Woodbridge, Gainesville).
How permits work in DC and Northern Virginia
In the District, permits come from the DC Department of Buildings, which took over permitting from the former DCRA in 2022; historic districts add review by the Historic Preservation Office. Virginia uses the statewide Uniform Statewide Building Code, administered locally, for example by Fairfax County Land Development Services, Arlington County, and Alexandria’s Code Administration. Most offices review electronically, so printed sets are mostly for the field, the owner, and bidders.
