Acrobat’s Print Dialog, Setting by Setting, for Plan PDFs
Open a 24×36 plan sheet in Acrobat, press Print, and your office printer will probably shrink it onto letter paper without asking. That’s Acrobat working as designed. Adobe’s help lists the application default for page scaling as “Shrink To Printable Area.”
A shrunken copy is fine to read at your desk. It’s useless for measuring. Below is what each option in Page Sizing & Handling does to a plan sheet. After that come three jobs people actually use Acrobat for with plans: checking scale on a small printer, tiling a full sheet, and printing a set with mixed sizes.
Sources. Adobe Acrobat Help pages on helpx.adobe.com, checked Oct 19, 2026. Adobe’s newer desktop pages are dated Sep 23, 2025. The “Basic PDF printing tasks” page is dated Feb 26, 2026. Where Adobe doesn’t say, we say so.
The four size options
Open the Print dialog (Ctrl + P on Windows, Command + P on a Mac) and click Size.
| Option | What Adobe says it does | On a 24×36 sheet sent to letter paper |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | “Reduces or enlarges each page to fit the printable area of the currently selected paper size.” | Shrinks the whole sheet. Not to scale. |
| Actual size | “Prints without scaling. Pages or selections that don’t fit on the paper are cropped.” | True scale, but you get roughly one corner of the sheet. |
| Shrink oversized pages | “Shrinks large pages to fit the currently selected paper size but doesn’t enlarge small pages.” | Same result as Fit here. Not to scale. |
| Custom Scale | “Resizes the page by the percentage you specify.” | Only to scale at 100%. |
The table shows the trade-off on a small printer: you can have the whole sheet or the true scale, not both. Our short answer on printing a PDF to scale covers the general rule. The rest of this page uses Acrobat’s tools to work around that trade-off.
Job 1: Check the scale on letter paper
You don’t need the whole sheet to know whether a PDF is to scale. You need a scale bar or a known dimension, printed at 100%. Acrobat can print just that part.
Adobe’s “Print a portion of a page” steps use the Snapshot tool. “You can print the selected area full size or resize it to fit the paper.” Adobe’s steps:
- On Windows, open the hamburger menu, then Undo, Redo & more > Take a snapshot. On a Mac, go to Edit > Undo, Redo & more > Take a snapshot.
- “Draw a rectangle to select a portion of a page.” Include the scale bar and a dimension string.
- Open Print, choose Selected graphic under Pages to Print, and set Size to Actual size.
Measure the printout with a ruler. If the 10-foot mark on a 1/4-inch scale bar sits at 2-1/2 inches, the PDF is to scale. If not, the file was resized before it reached you, and it’s worth asking the sender for a fresh export.
Job 2: Tile a full sheet across small pages
If you need the whole sheet at full size, say to tape it to a wall and walk a client through it, Acrobat can split it. Adobe describes Poster printing as “splitting the page across multiple sheets of paper (called “tiling”).” Choose Poster under Page Sizing & Handling, then set:
- Tile Scale: 100% keeps it to scale.
- Overlap: “Determines the amount each tile overlaps adjacent tiles.”
- Cut Marks: “Adds guide marks to each page to help you trim the overlap.”
- Labels: “Adds the filename and page number on each “tile.””
- Tile Only Large Pages: tiles only pages bigger than your paper.
Be realistic about the result. A 24×36 sheet takes a lot of letter pages, plus tape and patience. Small alignment errors add up across the seams. Use it to look things over, not for a permit or a job site.
Job 3: A set with more than one sheet size
Plan sets sometimes mix sizes, such as a 24×36 set with a 30×42 site plan. Adobe’s mixed-sizes steps are the same on Windows and Mac. Under Size, select Choose paper source by PDF page size. Adobe says that option “Uses the PDF page size to determine the output tray rather than the page setup option.” Then select custom paper size when needed.
That only matters if your printer can actually hold those sizes. Most office printers can’t. For a print order, nothing in Acrobat needs changing. Just confirm each page is the size you expect with our PDF page size checker.
For people who send plan PDFs: set Page Scaling to None
If you make the PDFs, you can stop recipients from shrinking them by accident. Acrobat stores print presets inside the PDF. Go to Document Properties > Advanced (from the hamburger menu on Windows, or File > Document Properties on a Mac). Under Print Dialog Presets, set Page Scaling to None. Adobe’s description is close to an argument for plan sets: it “Prevents automatic scaling to fit the printable area. Use this setting to preserve the scale in engineering documents.”
Two notes from Adobe: you need to “save the PDF after creating the print preset,” and the preset only sets the starting choice. The person printing can still change it.
FAQ
Can Acrobat print a 24×36 sheet in one piece?
Only if your printer takes 24×36 paper. Acrobat sends the page to whatever printer and paper you pick. Wide-format printers are what make full-size sheets.
Does Acrobat Reader have the Poster option?
Adobe’s basic printing page describes Poster without limiting it to Pro. Its newer “Print large documents” page says “Acrobat Pro automatically calculates the number of sheets required.” We couldn’t confirm from Adobe’s pages whether free Reader includes Poster. Open Print and look for the Poster button.
My plans are color. Can I proof them in black and white?
Yes. Adobe’s option is Print In Grayscale (Black And White) in the Print dialog. For the real order, you choose black and white ($1.95 a sheet) or color ($3.75) at checkout. You don’t need to convert the PDF.
Do Acrobat print settings change the PDF I upload?
No. They control only that one print job. The exception is the Page Scaling preset above, which is saved in the file and only pre-fills the dialog. We print from the PDF’s own page size. See our plan set PDF checklist before you upload.
Printing it
When the scale checks out, upload the PDF. We print each page at its own size, anywhere from 18×24 up to 36×48. 24×36 is the most common. It’s $1.95 per sheet for black and white and $3.75 for color, the same at every size, with no minimum order. Order by 3 PM ET, ships same day, arrives as soon as the next day.
